The Winch

I finally fitted a 4 tonne hydraulic superwich. I bought it from Ned in Ireland - he had removed it from a utilities Iveco vehicle.

At the Rear

The Tardis already has hydraulics at the rear of the vehicle and the weight distribution is better with it at the back, it was relatively easy to locate there. It is said a winch at the rear is better because you can pull yourself out of trouble rather then further into the problem - that being said visibility is not so good from the driver's seat.

The plan

  1. Understand the control box
  2. Ask Ned for the missing parts
  3. Buy a sheet of 6mm steel to mount it on
  4. Fix steel on top of bike rack mechanism
  5. Bolt winch on
  6. Work out where to put the roller guides. (very difficult because if the bike rack and rear access)
  7. Test using the bike rack hydraulic control
  8. Test using the electric operated solenoids.
The control circuit seemed to have several of safety interlocks, which are now all removed. Some pipes and extra safety bypass vale were blocked - now removed.
The solenoids were seized.  It was so badly stuck that nothing moved or came apart and I did not dare apply too much force because I had no idea what should come undone. You-tube was my friend.

Anyway all done, works beautifully and tested at the local quarry and at Whaddon offroad park.
