Ignition lock

easily removed the ignition lock thanks to advice from Marcus on the Iveco 4x4 forum. The lock was held on by those bolts that shear off when tightened, leaving a smooth head. I was prepared to drill them out, which meant removing the steering column again. However Marcus suggested trying to use a dot punch to push them round. This was easy as the head was quite soft material. Ordered a new one off ebay.

Brakes

Replaced front brake pads as required for the MOT: See the old vs. new. I'm rather irritated that the old pads at at least 5mm of material left, when the rule for the MOT is 1.5mm (which is when the slot would disappear). The new ones had a 10mm slot (+1.5mm)

MOT - nearly ready

Lights done Steering column stripped Lower bearing replaced - not really necessary Protective hood Part 37  93813870    replaced where the column entered the cab - that was needed, the existing home made one was rubbing on the UJs Circlip replaced  All refitted and wiring tidied up.

MOT - progress

Well brake pads ordered. They are out of stock in the UK! and may not arrive before the MOT runs out. The steering column has a disintegrated lower bearing, the one under the cab. I've ordered the assembly (item 3) on the parts list. The job needs doing but I'm not convinced it's the cause of the vertical play in steering column. Also ordered some LED light bulbs.

MOT 2013 fail

Well, the usually helpful and undemanding local garage is bit more fussy this year: 1) marker lights at the front on top of the cab and the camper !  I didn't think those were needed, just decoration, but apparently not, 2) front brake pads, well they looked OK to me and after 2000 miles they won't be much different to last year, but I guess it won't do much harm to replace them. 3) The steering column moves up and down. Just like it did last year in fact. This I have to admit should have had some attention before. A brief inspection leaves me largely clueless about what is supposed to hold it in place. A complete dismantle may be required ...
