Snorkel
A snorkel - is it worth it.
After years of searching for a snorkel, I finally agreed to buy an old one from Grahame. My other option was to adapt pone from a LandRover defender (Nigel had done that very well).
It is not a snorkel
First lesson is that it is not a snorkel. It is a raised air intake. The crucial difference is a snorkel is expected to be waterproof, but this design is open in the vehicle wing, which is not sealed, it has drain holes. So if left standing in very deep water, then the engine would suck in water not air.
A raised air intake is supposed to be good for drawing in air with less sand and dust.
But the key feature is that it looks cool.
Fitting is Difficult
It is a large plastic item, that stretches across two steel body panels. The fixings points don't line up well. It is prone to vibration and so the mounts need to be flexible. To keep water out it needs to be fitted tight and various holes sealed up. And the indicator light needs to fit on the outside.
Parts are needed
It is not a simple bolt on. Holes for the existing exterior trim do not line up for the snorkel. It needs several special parts and they are no longer all available. It needs a foam strip c 10mmx3mm. (I used 6mm thick, which was not ideal). Some holes need to be covered if a waterproof snorkel is wanted. I needed an extra mounting point near the indicator to seal the gap between snorkel and body.

ITM PART N. QT DESCRIPTION NOTE
001 4193370 02 PIPE
This is a simple beak valve. The pipe itself is part of the main snorkel. The part number is for the rubber valve only.
002 9060048 02 SILENTBLOCK
Critical item out of stock. It is a "cotton reel" rubber mount. The thickness is critical. Too thick and you will not be able to tighten the snorkel against the wing. Too narrow and it will not tighten up without bending the wing. I used 25mm diameter 10mm thick. The studs were 12mm
003 14560187 02 CABLE STRAP L=178 MM
It is a jubilee clip
004 16750121 01 HEXAGON NUT M6
005 17143604 03 SCREW
006 93929804 01 CONNECTING PLATE
This is a metal plate that goes on the outside of the snorkel. The indicator light push fits into it.
007 93930043 04 SCREW
008 93933538 01 HOUSING
This is the same part with or without a snorkel. Mine had a loose rubber seal at the outboard edge. It has a drain slot at the bottom, which needs to be sealed for any pretence of being water tight.
009 93936820 01 AIR PIPE/DUCT RIGHT
This is the main plastic snorkel. Only one part number, but there are at least two distinct versions with One, or Two drain pipes clearly visible. They are complicated pieces with various baffles and holes.
010 93936826 01 PROTECTIVE GRILLE
Critical part, only available as a pack of 5, but easily made.
011 93936819 01 CONNECTING PLATE
Critical part not available. It is needed to fix the snorkel to the wing. It matches up the hole in the wing with the cotton reel mount on the snorkel. Depending on the thickness of the cotton reel rubber, it may need to be an offset bracket. I used a flat piece of steel.
