water leak new pump
I clearly had a water leak, but with coolant catching the fan is was splattered all over and impossible to trace. I found it eventually by pressurising the header tank, thanks to a little hand pump that I had inherited from Rich. It was from the water pump. So new water pump:
The white plastic tube becomes brittle, and as predicted, it broke during disassembly.
Radiator out
Remove fanbelt and fan
Removal and reassembly is difficult with the thermostat housing in place so:
Remove timing chain cover.
Crankshaft pulley (do the trick of cranking the engine to loosen the big nut.
Remove pump, breaking the white tube in the process
Remove broken ends of the white tube.
I needed to reuse the big o-ring so I took it off carefully and also used Hylomar blue.
A 13mm spanner is needed to hold the tensionner out of the way for reassembly.
The idea of the white tube is that it slides up and down to make it possible to fit pump or thermostat individually. It is a tight fit. Having the right o-rings is critical. Use lubricant and check that it does move fully up and down.

Problems
I disturbed the thermostat housing and it leaked. Then taking it off to replace the gasket the long bolt broke off. I had to reassemble using 3 of 4 bolts. To help I used gasket goo instead of the paper gasket. Not yet sure if it has sealed up.
